Closer (2019) is a visual essay working through the images of my youth growing up in Australia. Using a mixture of material from my personal archive and my family's photo albums, as well as a selection re-filmed of pop cultural material from Australian television, the work is a subjective documentation of day-to-day life as a migrant in Australia.
Closer is an interrogation of cultural representation in the Australia from the mid 1990s to 2010. It was a time when people with a migration background were placed at the margins of any kind of media, and it was almost as if one had to zoom in and find us in amongst the stereotypical images of windswept blond surfers that dominated the popular imagination.
